Job Description and Eligibility Requirements

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is seeking an individual with significant research experience to lead a program addressing clinical research and intervention in diabetes and endocrine disorders in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (DDEMD). The DDEMD supports and provides leadership for research on the causes, prevention and treatment of diabetes and its complications, as well as other endocrine and metabolic diseases.

Current Opening

The NIDDK is seeking a physician scientist with strong managerial, communications and interpersonal skills, and experience in clinical care and clinical research in diabetes. The candidate to be considered will be one that has specific endocrinology training or training in internal medicine with a specific clinical or translational focus in diabetes and other chronic metabolic conditions. This position will be vital to continue to sustain our efforts in supporting clinical studies and trials in the areas of type 1 and type 2 DM. This individual will be a key part of these programs to better understand how to treat and prevent diabetes. In brief, the Program Director will oversee a portfolio of grants related to improving health outcomes in individuals with diabetes. The Program Director will also be involved in strategic planning for the division’s research priorities and in developing and providing oversight of large, multi-center studies addressing the treatment and prevention of diabetes. Areas of focus may include ongoing observational studies to examine the long-term effect of intensive diabetes management for type 1 diabetes, clinical trial networks that perform studies addressing the prevention of and early intervention in type 1 diabetes, studies to prevent or reverse hypoglycemia unawareness, as well as studies of individuals with atypical forms of diabetes to better inform the study of type 2 diabetes. The applicant should have experience in designing and conducting clinical trials.

The Program Director in DDEMD will work closely with the Division Director to enhance research activity by identifying opportunities for promoting research and intervention strategies in both forms of diabetes. The incumbent will assess research needs, identify emerging opportunities, develop initiatives, help to assess scientific priorities, support grantees and advise potential applicants of resource opportunities, and administer grants and awards. In addition to the scientific and administrative oversight of grants funded by DDEMD, the Program Director will be responsible for representing DDEMD on joint research activities in collaboration with other divisions and offices in NIDDK and NIH-wide when appropriate.

The applicant should have a and M.D or M.D./Ph.D. in endocrinology or have training in internal medicine with diabetes/metabolic disease focus and should have extensive clinical research experience.

The position is located in Bethesda, Maryland. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience of the applicant. However, workplace flexibility options are available at NIH.
