The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney diseases (NIDDK) is seeking a physician-scientist with experience in clinical obesity research for a program that will encompass interventions to prevent and treat obesity ranging from behavioral, pharmacological, device, and surgical interventions in adults, to community-based and multi-sectoral studies in populations experiencing health disparities. The Program Director position is in NIDDK’s extramural Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition. The mission of the division is to support research programs in the alimentary GI tract, hepatobiliary system, exocrine pancreas, obesity, and nutrition. In fiscal year 2022 the division made approximately 1,429 awards totaling approximately $640 million. The Program Director will also work closely with NIDDK’s Office of Obesity Research. NIDDK is considered the lead NIH Institute for obesity research, and NIDDK Obesity Research funding in fiscal year 2022 was $480 million. In addition to leading and managing a program of grants and cooperative agreements, the position includes senior advisory and collaborative activities such as planning workshops and initiatives and providing scientific expertise to multiple other programs in NIDDK and NIH.
This position requires an M.D. or equivalent degree with specialization in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine and subspecialty training in an area relevant to this program, such as Endocrinology, Obesity Medicine, Gastroenterology, or Nutrition. The position requires training and experience in clinical research in obesity and nutrition in adults. U.S. Citizenship is required.
